What kinds of stirrups are there?

The stirrups, each attached to the saddle with stirrup leathers, have an exchangeable treading surface. As far as riding safety is concerned, several models have integrated mechanisms to reduce the danger of accidents and injuries. The following types of horse stirrups should be distinguished:

  • Ordinary or customary horse stirrups are primarily used for dressage. The models, which have been proven for many years, lend reliable support in equestrian sports and favour the development of optimum riding posture.
  • Safety stirrups likewise convey the necessary support and extra protection besides. Because in the event of a fall, they release on the basis of a reliable mechanical function. The safety stirrups open to prevent the rider from getting stuck in the event of an accident. This type of stirrup is commonplace in dynamic disciplines such as show jumping or cross-country riding. Children and beginners will likewise benefit from enhanced safety in case a horse behaves turbulently or restlessly. Although, generally speaking, these products were originally recommended to beginners and amateur equestrians, they are becoming increasingly more popular among professional athletes.

There are two methods that can help you in connection with the reinforcement described above and ensure that you determine the right stirrup length: In the case of first version, you mount the horse and let your legs hang down. The treading surface of the stirrup must then be brought up to the height of your ankle. The second version is measured from the ground up: First, place your hand on the U-lock and then lay the stirrup along your arm. For the correct length, it should end in the armpit area. Please keep in mind: Proper stirrup adjustment is essential for reasons of protection, riding comfort as well as posture. It must be neither to narrow (problems of opening in case of an accident) nor too broad (risk of slipping out).
